Obituary 18 Feb 1848 Lebanon, Wilson County, Tennessee [3]
- in the Banner of Peace and Cumberland Presbyterian Advocate:
For the Banner of Peace.
Died at her residence, near Mt. Zion, Macon Cty. Ill., on the 10th of Jan. 1848, Mrs. Elizabeth J. Smith, wife of George A. Smith, in the 23d year of her age.
The subject of this notice was the daughter of Andrew and Mary Ann Wilson, born in Green Co. Tennessee, and emigrated to this State with her parents, when about five years old. She was early taught the necessity of a change of heart in order to fit her for a better world; and was, when quite young, enabled as we humbly trust, to commit the interest of her immortal spirit to the care of the great Redeemer. She immediately joined the C. P. Church, and remained a consistent member while she lived. Her sociability, friendship and vita gained for her the confidence and esteem of many friends, but death has removed her from their embraces. Her last affliction was short but exceedingly violent and painful, it bade deffiance[sic] to the skill of the physician and the strength of medicine. It moved on in its gigantic course and in thirty-six hours, produced death, in its suffering victim. Thus severing the endearing ties of husband and wife, mother and daughter, brother and sister, and all the cords that bind to earth.
She was deprived of her reason and speach[sic], almost from the first attack and consequently could not express her feelings and prospects in the last hour; but she had in her life furnished us with that evidence, upon which we build our confident hopes, that she is now where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are forever at rest.
We indulge the pleasing reflection that our beloved sister is now mingling with the Redeemer above, that she has joined her friends that had crossed Jordan's rugged stream before, and is now clothed upon with that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. She reigns with Jesus in glory.
O happy saint that dwells in light,
And walks with Jesus clothed in white:
Safe landed on that peaceful shore,
Where pilgrims meet to part no more.
May the Lord give the surviving friends resignation to his will and grace to improve their affliction to his glory.
